Alyssa Arnell

"Les Gens du Coulour"
Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve New Orleans, Louisiana

Alyssa is an interpretive ranger at the Chalmette Battlefield, part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve near New Orleans.  Chalmette is the site of the final battle of the War of 1812 (the Battle of New Orleans).  Alyssa is a lecturer in history at a local college.  She came to New Orleans because it was the place where people can be who they are - race, culture, personality.  Alyssa grew up in West Tennessee in a mixed-race family.  There she needed to "pass" to get along.  Not so in the Big Easy.
